Yinson is pleased to be the main sponsor in Malaysia and Singapore for International Coastal Clean-Up Day (ICC) 2019, a nationwide beach clean-up event that will take place on Saturday, 21st September. The event, organised by non-profit organisation Reef Check Malaysia, aims to raise awareness on the issue of marine debris – specifically plastic waste – and how it affects marine ecosystems and human health.
ICC 2018 saw a huge volunteer turnout of 4,018 people in 84 locations. More than 7,500 kg of trash was removed during the clean-up, with the most common items being plastic bottles (30,248), cigarette butts (20,299) and plastic grocery bags (12,055).
The initiative will see Yinson employees from our Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Miri offices taking proactive action to clean up the beaches in our respective local areas.
Yinson’s Group Chief Executive Officer Lim Chern Yuan said that Yinson’s participation in the initiative would see the company’s core value of ‘sustainable’ being put into action in a tangible and practical way.
“As a company whose assets operate offshore, our desire is to contribute back positively to the ocean ecosystem and its inhabitants by keeping it pollution-free and healthy,” he said.
He added that Yinson’s participation this year was especially meaningful, as the company’s newest asset, FPSO Helang, was due to be completed and commence operations offshore Miri, Sarawak by end 2019 for up to 18 years.
Reef Check Malaysia’s General Manager, Julian Hyde, welcomed Yinson’s commitment. “Yinson’s support for ICC will allow us to arrange a much bigger clean-up event this year, involving more people in more places. Not only will we be removing trash from beaches, but it gives us a great opportunity to interact with a wide range of stakeholders and to raise awareness about this very important issue.”
