Yinson, in partnership with Teach For Malaysia (“TFM”) introduced the Teach For Malaysia tutoring programme (“programme”) to help schools and students affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and floods.

An estimated 4.9 million Malaysian students were affected by school closures due to the pandemic and flood, during which teachers and school administrators struggled to find alternative solutions to deliver lessons. Launched in October 2021, the programme aims to narrow knowledge gaps amongst students who were affected by the closures.

Based on TFM Impact Report 2021- 2022, the programme has yielded 4,739 tutoring hours and directly supported 639 secondary school students from 18 schools since the launch, with 88% of students showing overall academic growth and 59% of students showing growth in academic confidence.

One school that has benefited from the programme is SMK Seksyen 19, located in Shah Alam. The school, which has 2,576 students and 183 teachers, has an outstanding reputation in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. However, in 2021, the school’s capacity to deliver quality education was greatly impacted due to the pandemic. To make matters worse, it was one of the schools hardest hit by a 1-in-100-year flooding event in December. Aside from support provided through the tutoring programme, Yinson also responded by donating 10 laptops and 2 printers to SMK Seksyen 19.

Yinson’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee Chairman, JJ Chai recently visited SMK Seksyen 19. He commented, “Education is something that is very close to our hearts and is reflected in our Group-wide alignment with one of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education. Yinson has a long history with TFM, and we are glad to work with them once again to introduce this tutoring programme. We are deeply encouraged to see that the programme has had such positive impacts on the emerging generation.”

Another school affected by flood in Mentakab, namely SMJK(C) Hwa Lian is also part of the tutoring programme to support education recovery. Yinson has donated 30 tablets to the students in SMJK(C) Hwa Lian aiming to close the resource divide between students and access to online learning. Apart from the tutoring programme, Yinson continues to support TFM’s Fellowship programme to place individuals with promising competencies and skillsets at schools that serve low-income communities.

Yinson has always championed various CSR initiatives to bring cheer and hope to communities in need. As part of our flood relief initiatives in Malaysia, throughout 2021 and 2022 we have contributed towards flood relief programmes run by TFM and Malaysia Red Crescent Society in affected areas to recover and build resilience against the physical impact of climate change.
