In line with Yinson’s commitment to uphold quality education, Yinson sponsored the Intel Aspire Minds Innovation Space Challenge Workshop 2022 (“workshop”) in Kota Kinabalu, held from 9 to 10 December 2022 at University Malaysia Sabah (“UMS”). The event was co-hosted by the UMS Faculty of Engineering and IEEE Sabah.
In the hands-on workshop, themed ‘Make your Future Factory’, students were introduced to fundamental concepts of computer programming and electronics. Amongst the event’s key highlights was a guided programming tutorial for students to code for an industrial robotic arm.
35 school teams from the rural schools from Tuaran, Kinabatangan, Ranau and Kota Kinabalu education districts of Sabah participated in the workshop. Yinson’s sponsorship went towards covering operating costs for books, learning materials and refreshments for the school children, teachers, university student volunteers and lecturers.
Yinson Director of the CEO Office and Chair of the CSR committee, JJ Chai commented, “The goals of the workshop align with our core CSR principle and reflect our commitment towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education. By investing in robust STEM education, we help to develop a high-skilled talent pool that would help fuel our future economic growth.”
The workshop is part of a national STEM outreach programme organised by Aspire, in partnership with Intel and the Malaysia Invention and Design Society (“MINDS”), to advance digital literacy amongst youth in rural Malaysia. This workshop is also supported by the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation (“MOSTI”) as part of National Science Week. Since launched in 2017, the programme has reached over 1,000 students from 300 schools in Sabah, Sarawak, Penang, Perak, Selangor and WP Kuala Lumpur, inspiring children in making autonomous vehicles, program drones, make environment sensors and AI vision analytics.
