children in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil recently by funding the building of a self-sustainable kitchen garden area.
Working closely with Obra do Berço and Saber Global, the contractor agency hired by the shelter who is responsible for coordinating the entire project, the Yinson Brazil office contributed approximately USD10,000 to the project as part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment.
A majority of the funds went into fixing up the shelter’s existing garden area and turning it into a self-sustainable little kitchen garden complete with proper irrigation and water proofing edges. The rest of the funds went into buying gardening tools, seeds and install a recycling system for the shelter.
Once the garden is up and running, our Brazil Yinsonites volunteered alongside shelter personnel and the children to plant various herbs, vegetables and fruits such as rosemary, basil, parsley, mint, bell peppers, papaya and jabuticaba trees, also known as the Brazilian grapetree.
According to one of our Yinsonites, “Being able to represent Yinson as one of the contributors to this project fills my heart with joy. The children are all so curious and sensible to nature. They always come super excited and full of questions when it comes to gardening lessons, and they have really been helping a lot with the garden’s weekly maintenance. I’m so pleased to see how happy they are with the new garden area we have helped build,” said Thais Villela, HR Manager at Yinson in Brazil.
As many as 72 children of all ages, with some as young as five years old, will benefit from this project as the shelter plans on implementing hands-on ecology classes for the children which will take place at the newly built garden.
The shelter also has plans to conduct workshops with newly installed recycling system to educate the children on the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling.
