Yinson Summer Internship Norway

Back

The Yinson Production Norway Internship programme aims to build a strong foundation, while maximising the interns’ potential for success in their future career. The annual programme is open to Norwegian students in their penultimate or final year of higher education with a desire to work within a global multi-cultural company in the energy sector. Our goal is to allow the interns to gain an insight into business life at Yinson, give them an on-the-job training opportunity, as well as the possibility to put into practice all their academic knowledge in an international and cross-cultural environment.

The first internship programme was launched in 2021, a scheme which was unprecedented for Yinson Production in Oslo. After receiving over 400 applicants, six candidates stood out and were ultimately selected for the internship: working on real-time projects matching their skills and interests.

The three-month program kicked off in June 2021 with a two-day induction event, followed by a social dinner with their mentors, and lasted until August 2021. Towards the end of their internship, all of the participating candidates presented what they had worked on along with the lessons learnt and recommendations for Yinson. This was presented to the management, giving Yinson an all-important fresh perspective from the interns.

Following its success, the internship programme is now open to Yinson Production, Yinson Renewables and Yinson Green Technologies in Oslo, inviting talented students to bring in their new perspectives and solve real tasks and challenges.

We are delighted to share the stories of our six intern graduates from the 2021 intake:

Sohrab Sekandar

The internship gave me an invaluable learning experience as a technical intern.  I had the opportunity to further explore the finding of my master thesis with deliverables such as

  • General Arrangement
  • System PFD
  • Simulation of a model in Aspen
  • Cost analysis
  • Final report

This was an amazing experience and has been nothing short of extraordinary.

From the practical experience I have gained to the brilliant people I have met, being at Yinson marked a defining chapter in my career.

The internship was also a great opportunity for me to join Yinson as a junior project engineer at a later stage.

I would highly recommend the internship!

Starting an internship can be quite daring, because it means a lot to a student who is just finishing their studies. When we started in Yinson Production last summer we were met with a great introduction of the departments that we would encounter most during our internships, they gave us a foundation of the company and the business that we are in. As an intern joining a new company this is one of the things that I appreciated most as it gave us the chance to get to know the people in the departments straight away. Our HR department made sure we had a great start to our internship with different social activities and the internship was based on a mentorship from the department we worked in following us through the internship.

My HSEQ department welcomed me with open arms, and I was excited to put my knowledge on the maritime regulations, ship security and maritime piracy to the test. I was quickly enrolled into various types of HSEQ meetings, brought up to speed on the HSEQ reporting software and handed my first project: to implement digital reporting for waste management on our FPSO’s. Several other tasks were handed my way by my mentor: supporting the CSO in different tasks, following up on HSEQ reporting, rewriting procedures and I quickly became a part of our management system transfer team. Still today I work with Unisea, implementing new modules and the Yinson Production management system to name a few tasks. The contact with our offshore crew is also part of what I appreciate in my job as we are working in the office to create procedures and workflows that are possible to execute on our FPSO’s, therefore knowing the people you talk to and get their feedback on tasks that can be improved is important to me and my job as an HSEQ coordinator.

If you enjoy juggling many balls at the same time, are a quick thinker and is interested in the ever-changing energy sector and maritime operations then I recommend you apply to the Yinson Internship. The Yinson team is made up of people from diverse backgrounds and gives you the opportunity to connect with people all around the globe from Malaysia to Brazil. The internship programme opens many doors and can even lead to a professional job afterwards. My journey with Yinson so far has been nothing more than exciting, I encourage you to apply, and I will be happy to see the new internship joiners this summer.

Working as a procurement intern, the majority of my tasks were related to operational procurement in offshore production. My main responsibility was ensuring the supply of requested goods and services to a FPSO-vessel located outside the coast of Nigeria. Being a part of this team meant frequent interactions with offshore engineers and suppliers was necessary to assure that the goods and services had the correct specifications. Working with tasks important for operation was rewarding and encouraging, while at the same time making me feel like a part of the team (not just an intern). I was given responsibility quite early on and was trusted to work independently as well. If I had any questions, I always had someone to ask and was encouraged to do so.

I experienced the importance of being able to adapt as I was interacting with people from different backgrounds and nationalities on a daily basis. This also helped me with the global mindset needed to work for Yinson. That will definitely benefit me in the future.

My overall experience with Yinson was very positive and I always felt welcome at the office.

I got the impression that they wanted me to be there and that it was important for Yinson that the benefits from working there were mutual. A big part of the internship programme is therefore to learn and familiarise yourself with Yinson and the industry.

I enjoyed my time there and I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in this field.

I worked in ORA (Operations Readiness and Assurance) for 3 months during the summer. My main project during the summer was to assist in developing a new reporting structure for the company. This project was interesting and at times challenging, but I enjoyed it. I have a background from computer science/business, and I got to use the theory from university in a practical way in this internship. The work environment in Yinson is very good and everyone were welcoming and helpful during the internship. I worked really close with my mentor (?) and that was very helpful. I would highly recommend interning at Yinson. At Yinson you get to work with talented people in a great work environment, and you get to work on a real project. This internship gave me a great opportunity to learn a lot about a business I didn’t know much about before interning.

I have worked part-time as Operations Assistant at Yinson since the internship ended. I am very grateful for that opportunity, and this gives me great work experience while finishing my masters.

Aurora Stenvig

During my four-month internship at Yinson as an Engineering Intern for the Electrical Department, I was mainly involved with the design of the onboard electrical power systems on two separate FPSO-projects for Total Energy. My responsibilities revolved around the development of the design philosophies and the subsequent follow-up review and assessment of supplier design proposals and documentation. I really appreciated the high level of trust granted to me from an early stage and the openness and availability of my mentor and co-workers. This combination made working at Yinson an incredible learning experience and provided me with plenty of hands-on experience I highly value. I will always be proud of being part of the first-ever Yinson Summer Internship Program in Oslo. Therefore, I am thrilled to have been offered a position as Junior Electrical Engineer here after I finish my master’s thesis this spring!

I would highly encourage anyone currently studying a relevant technical discipline to apply for the Yinson Summer Internship Program for a chance to apply your theoretical knowledge to real-life applications.

First of all, I would like to thank my mentor and Yinson for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the internship program. The experience I’ve gained throughout my period as intern is invaluable and it’s been a pleasure to get to know and work with everyone in the various departments.

During my summer at Yinson I worked as a commercial intern, focusing primarily on strategic planning and financial initiatives as a part of Yinson’s overall strategic plan. What I appreciated as an intern was the flexibility and the opportunity to work with relevant tasks and real projects both individually and as a part of a team. Yinson is a fantastic team to be a part of and I would most definitely recommend everyone to apply for the internship program.

The internship helped me land my first job as a Commercial Coordinator within Yinson Production, and I couldn’t be happier that I accepted the challenge back in August!
