Yinson supported a rainwater harvesting project by the Empowered Women Engineers Society (“EWE”) – one of the grant recipients of Yinson4Youth 2026. The “Rain4Youth: Harvesting Hope” project, spearheaded by the student-led society at Taylor’s University, aims to improve water resilience and sustainability practices at the At-Risk Youth Character Development Centre (Shalom) in Negeri Sembilan. The installation of the four rainwater harvesting systems will benefit about 37 individuals living at the centre, helping to reduce water shortages and tariffs.
As part of the implementation, four rainwater harvesting systems (“RWHS”) were installed at the centre to support its daily operations. The harvested rainwater will be channelled to household needs as well as for farming activities, including the care of plants and livestock, which form part of the centre’s day-to-day livelihood and character development programmes. This intervention reduces the reliance on treated water while enhancing adaptive capacity to climate-related water disruptions.
In addition, EWE facilitated practical workshops and guided fieldwork on water-related skills, linking sustainable water practices directly to the youths’ everyday needs and activities. Six Yinson volunteers supported the session through the rainwater harvesting system maintenance demonstration. This engagement aimed to equip participating youths with practical green skills in water stewardship, system maintenance, and responsible resource use whilst ensuring the systems remain operational well beyond the grant period.
Reflecting on the project’s objectives, Tham Jia Huey, Project Manager of the EWE Rain4Youth: Harvesting Hope project, shared: “Partnership and trust flow like rainwater where each effort may seem small on its own, but together they create something powerful and enduring. Through the collaboration between EWE and Yinson, alongside the support of valued partners, the Y4Y grant goes beyond funding by providing guidance and motivation, empowering youths to lead with purpose and creating sustainable impact that extends well beyond the project period.”
The project was delivered with mentorship support under the Y4Y programme, with Andy Wong, Head of Corporate IT at Yinson, supporting the EWE team throughout the initiative. “The project demonstrated how youth-led innovation, supported by mentorship and volunteerism, can result in solutions that are both practical and sustainable, while creating meaningful community impact,” he said.
Rain4Youth: Harvesting Hope is one of the 3 shortlisted Y4Y initiatives in 2026. The project contributes directly to three Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
- SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation.
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- SDG 13: Climate Action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
The project reflects Yinson’s continued commitment to empowering youth-led initiatives that deliver tangible environmental and social outcomes.
