In celebration of Hari Merdeka 2025, Malaysia’s Independence Day, Yinson collaborated with SAGEMAKER ASIA PLT (“SAGEMAKER”) to co-create educational products that celebrate Malaysian culture and identity. The event brought together 15 Yinson volunteers and local women artisans from underserved communities at SAGEMAKER’s community hub for a day filled with creativity, collaboration, and cultural appreciation.
Working hand-in-hand with the women artisans, who are also known as Sagemakers, Yinson volunteers helped produce 10 playmats featuring Malaysian landmarks, food, and native flora and fauna, 50 sets of traditional costumes puppets, and 30 Buah-buahan Tempatan playbooks introducing local fruits. These handcrafted items will serve as educational gifts, sample products, or consigned merchandise with the proceeds from the sale of these co-crafted items going to SAGEMAKER, and a dedicated portion channelled directly to the women artisans. This initiative reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to economically empower the underserved communities through sustainable income opportunities.
Maizatul Kamal, Chief Executive Officer of SAGEMAKER, shared, “We are delighted to collaborate once again with Yinson through Yinson4Youth (“Y4Y”) and its dedicated volunteers. This meaningful engagement not only strengthened Yinson employees’ connection with the SAGEMAKER community but also accelerated production by nearly three weeks, while also fostered mutual learning and respect, embodying the spirit of Merdeka.”
Chong Sit Moi, Accounting Team Lead at Yinson Renewables and the project mentor for SAGEMAKER, commented, “Being part of this journey with SAGEMAKER has been incredibly fulfilling. Through our collaboration with the Sagemakers and the creation of crafts that celebrate our unique heritage, we hope to carry forward the spirit of Merdeka – fostering solidarity, nurturing pride in our local identity, and strengthening communities with the resources to grow and thrive in the long term.”
SAGEMAKER, a 2025 Y4Y grant recipient, is a social enterprise dedicated to empowering and equipping women from underserved communities with the tools and training to craft marketable handmade goods with the goal of ensuring economic resilience. This collaboration represents Yinson’s second initiative, with the first initiative focusing on transforming their space into a vibrant community hub, which now serves as a production centre for the Sagemakers.
