Yinson, in partnership with Teach For Malaysia, recently held an art competition for the students of SMK Seksyen 19, Shah Alam, with the theme, “Building a better and sustainable future”.
Held in February & March 2023, the competition aimed to raise sustainability awareness amongst the students, and empower them to take action for a better future. A total of 52 artworks were received, in which the students creatively incorporated their views on today’s sustainability issues, how they can be overcome, and what the future could look like. These included depictions of the current climate change crisis, the role of technology in the transition and a future with clean rivers, bluer skies and opportunities for everyone.
“I am incredibly proud of all the students who participated in this art competition. It’s inspiring to see such creativity and passion from our future leaders. As a global energy and infrastructure provider, we recognise the importance of cultivating a sustainable future, and it’s heartening to see these young artists also embracing this vision. We look forward to having future initiatives like this to empower and engage our youths in building a better tomorrow,” expressed Mr Chai Jia Jun, Yinson Group Chief Strategy Officer, who presented the prizes to the students at the prize-giving ceremony.
The top three winners were awarded a Samsung Galaxy Tab each, as well as vouchers. The runners-up received Popular bookstore vouchers as the consolation prize while all participating students were presented with an art kit and a certificate of completion.
Nur Qalisa Safwa Binti Noor Bayuri, 14, whose drawing depicted a hand ‘unzipping’ a canvas to reveal a cleaner, technology-enhanced future, was chosen as the overall winner of the art competition. “I hope my art is able to inspire others to do their part in creating a sustainable future and protecting the planet for future generations like me, so we can enjoy a beautiful and healthy world for generations to come,” she said.
“Teach For Malaysia is pleased to partner with Yinson for this art competition, as it helps builds awareness in the students about the challenges of climate change facing our planet, and the importance of our young generation today to be engaged in the movement towards change for the better,” says Fam Li Ying, Head of Growth for Teach For Malaysia.
The artworks created from this competition will be used in future Yinson communication materials, including its upcoming 2023 annual report, themed, “Inclusive Transition”, which shall reflect the shared values and journey between the Group and the community towards promoting a sustainable development.
During the prize-giving ceremony, Dr Renard Siew, Head of Corporate Sustainability, Yinson, shared the Company’s sustainability journey and the current sustainability landscape, while Chai presented Yinson-sponsored jerseys to the rugby team of SMK Seksyen 19 in support of the school’s youth development efforts.
