Yinson had the privilege to partner with Yinson4Youth (Y4Y) 2025 recipient, SOLS Foundation in supporting the Kampung Energy and Education Access project. The project brought clean energy to the Orang Asli (Indigenous) community in Kampung Tompesel, Pahang through the donation of 15 home solar systems, which addressed their lack of access to electricity due to underdeveloped infrastructure and economic marginalisation.
12 Yinson volunteers dedicated eight hours to support the installation of home solar systems led by SOLS Foundation. During the session, the volunteers assisted in assembling and installing the solar systems in 15 households, replacing candles, oil lamps, and lights powered by petrol generators with clean, safe and cost-free lighting solutions. The team also conducted community profiling surveys to better understand the local energy needs, helping lay the groundwork for future development.
Alongside the installations, the project further supported their long-term empowerment and self-sufficiency by providing financial literacy training to the community members living there. The volunteers facilitated basic financial literacy education workshops, equipping the community members with practical skills in budgeting, distinguishing between needs and wants, and recognising fraudulent financial activities.
Sarvaisywarya Sivarajah, SOLS Foundation Rural Education Senior Manager, acknowledged the team’s efforts and said, “Yinson volunteers played an instrumental role in bringing sustainable energy to Kampung Tompesel. Through the installation of home solar systems and the facilitation of financial literacy workshops, they have not only improved access to clean energy, but also empowered the community with essential financial skills – significantly elevating their overall quality of life.”
Ong Ken Yong, Yinson Group Head of Corporate Finance & Treasury, who served as SOLS Foundation’s project mentor and volunteer highlighted, “At Yinson, we believe access to sustainable energy should be a basic right for everyone. By integrating renewable energy with financial literacy, we are addressing the community’s immediate needs while building foundational skills for the future together.”
SOLS Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation, specialises in education and skills development programs for underserved communities. Through the Y4Y grant, Yinson has fulfilled SOLS Foundation’s mission of expanding rural energy access and improving financial resilience among the Orang Asli settlements.
